Description

An aristocrat of the Kiwi world! Kiwi ‘Golden Kiwi’ is a special selection of Actinidia chinensis bearing golden yellow fruits that are a cut above the common green Kiwi: the fruits have smoother skin and softer textured, yellow flesh that is sweeter and more aromatic. It forms a smaller vine than the Green Kiwi, clothed in attractive red-haired, heart-shaped leaves. An exciting addition to the exotic fruit garden! Height and spread: 1.8m (5.9ft).

Pollination
This female kiwi needs a male kiwi for pollination, such as Kiwi ‘Atlas’.

Estimated time to cropping once planted: 2 years.
Estimated time to best yields: 5 years.

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow

Grow Golden Kiwi plants in a sunny position in fertile, well drained, slightly acid soil. A sheltered position is essential as kiwis are particularly sensitive to adverse weather conditions. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the planting hole. Plant kiwi vines, firm in and water well. Provide the twining stems with an appropriate support wires strung between sturdy posts, to train as an espalier.

More Info

Feed and water regularly until fully established, particularly during hot dry periods. Train the stems onto their supports. In autumn apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost to the base of the plant.

Prune kiwi fruit plants in winter by January, to avoid sap bleed. In the first two years, prune plants to create an espalier framework of one permanent leading stem and two horizontal stems. Cut back the leading shoot to maintain it within the allotted space. Fruit is formed on the previous year's wood, and also on fruit spurs created by cutting back side shoots on horizontal stems to 3 or 4 buds. From April – July, gradually prune back long 1-year-old shoots to about 15 cm past the last fruit. Apply generous quantities of well rotted organic matter around the rootball during the growing season. Plants may take 3 years before producing a full crop of delicious kiwi fruit.
