Description

A more compact version of oak-leaved hydrangea that suits smaller gardens and containers, Hydrangea quercifolia 'Ice Crystal' only grows to just over a metre on maturity. This deciduous shrub bears white conical flower panicles from July to September against a background of deeply lobed foliage that takes on red and purple tones in the autumn. Oak-leaved hydrangeas are resilient, low-maintenance shrubs that require very little pruning and thrive in sun or light shade. They make excellent subjects for mixed borders or woodland areas and established specimens are more drought tolerant than Hydrangea macrophylla. Height and spread: 1-1.2m (39-47in).

How to Grow
Hydrangea quercifolia prefers a sunny or semi shaded position, with shelter from cold, drying winds. Grow hydrangea plants in any rich fertile, moist soil. Improve the soil prior to planting by adding with plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost, ensuring that it is mixed in thoroughly and deeply. Alternatively plant hydrangea quercifolia in patio containers in soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3.
More Info
Water regularly until plants are fully established. Leave the faded hydrangea flower heads in place until the new buds swell in spring to protect the delicate buds from frost damage. Prune after flowering, reducing the stems to restrict their growth to the available space and to improve the shape of the plant. If necessary, Hydrangea paniculata will tolerate hard pruning of the oldest stems to a few buds from ground level. This will also encourage larger flower heads to be produced. After pruning hydrangeas, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost around the base of the plant. Caution: irritant to skin and eyes, harmful if eaten.

Thompson & Morgan strives to ensure that all its plants are delivered to you in the perfect condition for planting. While the majority of our nursery plants cope well with slight delays in intransit, sadly, the time it takes to deliver to certain locations in the UK means that we can't guarantee this for some of our smaller plug products and tender bedding and vegetable lines, which do not respond well to the extra journey time. So regretfully while we offer the majority of our live plant offering nationwide, we are unable to ship plugs, begging plants and tender vegetable plants to the following areas: HS, IV41-IV49, IV51, IV55-56, KW15-KW17, PA34, PA41-48, PA60-PA78, PA80, PH40-PH44, TR21-TR24, ZE1-ZE3
