Description
Wonderfully statuesque, the graceful stems of this Golden Bamboo will create a superb architectural focal point in your garden. The arching butter-yellow canes are attractively striped with green, while the slender bright green leaves remain evergreen for interest all year round. Easy to grow and fully hardy, Phyllostachys aureocaulis has been awarded a prestigious RHS AGM, making an elegant specimen for borders or large patio containers. Grow bamboo towards the back of shrub borders, as an attractive screen for exotic gardens, or as a leafy under storey in woodland. Height: 6m (20'). Spread: 3m (10').

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow
When growing Golden Bamboo in pots, choose a soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Repot the plant, firming well into the new container, then water well and position in full sun or semi shade. Alternatively plant Golden Bamboos directly into borders in any moist, free draining soil. Bamboos dislike poor, dry soils. If your soil is particularly free draining, improve it by adding plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost prior to planting. Choose a sheltered position that is protected from cold, drying winds. Phyllostachys aureocaulis spreads via underground rhizomes so is best given space to grow. Alternatively surround the roots with a barrier to restrict the plant’s spread.
More Info
Feed and water bamboo plants regularly, particularly when grown in containers. Repot into successively larger containers as plants increase in size. Once bamboo plants are established, thin out any weak, damaged or unwanted canes in spring, cutting them back to ground level, and apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost to the base of the plant. Mature bamboos can be divided in spring if clumps become congested.
