Description
Commonly known as Sea Holly, this thistle-like perennial produces upright, branching stems of thimble-sized, steel-blue flowers surrounded by spiny bracts. From July to early autumn, these long-lasting blooms provide a valuable source of nectar for butterflies and pollinating insects. Eryngium planum makes fabulous gap filler for the middle of herbaceous borders, where it will happily mingle with other perennials. Perfect for sunny borders, including coastal locations, or planted in wildlife areas and cut flower gardens. Height: 90cm (36"). Spread: 45cm (18").

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow
Grow sea holly plants on light, well drained soil in full sun. Eryngium plants particularly dislike cold, wet soil in winter which may cause the crown to rot. If planting on heavy soils, dig in plenty of coarse grit to improve drainage prior to planting.
More Info
Feed and water regularly throughout the growing season until plants are fully established. Leave faded eryngium flower heads in place until spring to benefit from the winter interest they will add to your borders. In cold wet soils, use a cloche to protect the crown of the plant from winter rainfall. Lift and divide overcrowded clumps of eryngium in spring. Only lift it when necessary as sea holly can be slow to re-establish.
