Description

Native to central Mexico, where it is rare and endangered, Echinocactus grusonii is prized by cactus collectors for its pleasingly spherical form, and is aptly known as Mother-in-law’s Cushion. Echinocactus grusonii forms lovely pale green domes bearing prominent ribs that are studded with bright golden spines. It makes a sculptural focal point for a sunny windowsill or conservatory. Its good looks and ease of care have been recognised with an RHS Award of Garden Merit. Old specimens eventually produce yellow flowers about 6cm in length. Maximum height and spread: 50cm (20in).

How to Grow
Grow in full light with some shelter from the hottest sun. An average temperature of 10- 23C (50-75F) is ideal. In summer, water with soft water or rain water. Allow the compost to dry out completely between watering. Avoid leaving in standing water or over-watering as this will cause it to rot. Feed regularly with Cactus fertiliser between March and September when in active growth. In winter, while the plant is dormant, reduce watering and allow the compost to remain dry.
