One of the best known carnivorous plants available, the Venus Fly Trap makes a fascinating houseplant. Wide ‘traps’ are held open, promising nectar to unsuspecting insects. Flies that land on these traps are instantly imprisoned as the traps snap shut around them. The traps then become fused around the prey and slowly digest them over the next 2 weeks.
These intriguing house plants may not be the prettiest, but they will certainly make a talking point. Dionaea muscipula do require specific care to thrive, but the effort is well worth it, and they make an absorbing subject to learn about. Height: 30cm (12"). Spread: 20cm (8").
Note: Avoid setting off the traps unnecessarily as this requires considerable energy and is likely to damage the plant.
Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.
Please note: Some houseplants are toxic or harmful to pets if ingested. If you believe your pet has consumed a poisonous plant then seek veterinary attention immediately. Take a sample of the plant with you.

Originating from swamps and wet savannahs in the south-east USA, Dionaea muscipula will need permanently moist (but not soggy) soil. This is best achieved by regular watering in a water tray throughout the growing season - avoid watering from above. Always use rainwater or distilled water, as carnivorous plants are particularly sensitive to the chemicals contained in tap water. Venus Fly Traps do not need feeding - they will catch all of the food that they need themselves.
In autumn, Venus Fly Traps become dormant and the compost should be kept just moist. Resume watering, when plants start into growth again. During winter Dionaea plants require a temperature of around 5C (32F).
