Dianthus ‘Pink Gem’ is a useful choice for free-draining, sunny borders, lending itself to dry border edges, gravel gardens, rock gardens and cottage-style planting as well as containers. It also makes a delightful and long-lasting cut flower. The bright pink flowers with darker eye rings appear in profusion from June to July, above low spreading mats of narrow, evergreen foliage. Height: 20cm (8in). Spread: 30cm (12in).

Sow February to April. Sow seed on the surface of lightly firmed, moist seed compost in pots or trays and cover with a fine sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. Keep at a temperature of between 18-20C (64-68F). After sowing, do not exclude light as this helps germination. Keep the surface of the compost moist but not waterlogged. Germination usually takes 14-30 days.
Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle into trays or 7.5cm (3in) pots. Gradually acclimatise plants to cooler conditions for a few weeks before planting out after all risk of frost, at a distance of 30cm (12in) apart. Plant Dianthus on any fertile, well drained soil in full sun.
Feed and water Dianthus plants regularly until they are fully established. Deadhead faded Dianthus flowers to encourage more blooms to be produced throughout the summer.
