Description

Sweet and fruity as the classic dessert ! Dahlia ‘Rhubarb and Custard’ features a ring of broad, pale peach petals with a deep pink base surrounding a frill of blush-pink mini-petals that add a dainty flounce to the design. Collarette dahlias have smaller flowers than other varieties, around 10-15cm in diameter, but they are produced in great abundance and blend more easily into mixed, cottage-style borders than some of the bigger, showier dahlias. Dahlia ‘Rhubarb and Custard’ is also reasonably compact, making it well suited to container displays. This cheerful dahlia will re-energise late summer displays, providing prolific blooms from July to the first frosts. Just keep dead-heading and there will be armfuls of blooms to fill indoor vases too. Height: 50cm (20in) to 70cm (27in). Spread: 30cm (12in) to 50cm (20in).

How to Grow
Plant Dahlia tubers outdoors in April after all risk of frost has passed. Choose a sunny position in moist well drained soil. Prepare the soil by digging in plenty of well rotted manure or compost. Plant tubers at a depth of 15cm (6") and water well. Alternatively, start tubers into growth in pots of compost in a frost free greenhouse. Transplant them into their final positions outdoors in June.
More Info
Feed and water dahlias regularly throughout the growing season. While plants are still young, pinch out the growing tip of each stem to encourage bushier growth and masses of flowers. As dahlias develop, the taller varieties will require staking with garden canes to support their stems. Deadhead faded dahlia flowers to encourage more blooms to be produced. With the first autumn frosts, remove tubers from their growing positions and trim away the old stems to 5cm above the tuber. Clean any remaining soil from the tubers and store them over winter in trays of peat or sand, in a cool but frost free position. The tubers can be planted the following spring for another fabulous display.
