Description

Dahlia Collarette Mix contains a selection of eye-catching ‘collarette’ varieties in a vibrant mix of burgundy, cream, orange and pink blooms.

Collarette dahlias have distinctive features which set them apart from other dahlia forms. The flowers are smaller than other varieties, around 10-15cm diameter, but are produced in great abundance. Each one sports a central ruff of shorter, frilled petals encircled by a ring of single outer petals. Outer and inner petals often have contrasting colours, enhancing the design. The result is a dahlia with a neat and jaunty appearance that is guaranteed to reinvigorate late season borders just as many perennials are fading. Plants are reasonably compact and suited to growing in large containers as well as borders.

These dapper dahlias boast exceptional garden performance, providing blooms from July until the first frosts. They also make outstanding cut flowers. Height: 60 cm-90cm (2-3ft). Spread: 30-50cm (12-20in).

How to Grow
Plant Dahlia tubers outdoors in April after all risk of frost has passed. Choose a sunny position in moist well drained soil. Prepare the soil by digging in plenty of well rotted manure or compost. Plant tubers at a depth of 15cm (6") and water well. Alternatively, start tubers into growth in pots of compost in a frost free greenhouse. Transplant them into their final positions outdoors in June.
More Info
Feed and water dahlias regularly throughout the growing season. While plants are still young, pinch out the growing tip of each stem to encourage bushier growth and masses of flowers. As dahlias develop, the taller varieties will require staking with garden canes to support their stems. Deadhead faded dahlia flowers to encourage more blooms to be produced. With the first autumn frosts, remove tubers from their growing positions and trim away the old stems to 5cm above the tuber. Clean any remaining soil from the tubers and store them over winter in trays of peat or sand, in a cool but frost free position. The tubers can be planted the following spring for another fabulous display.
