Pumpkin ‘Big Max’ can produce fruits of up to 45kg. A popular variety for village and society shows, it offers rich orange flesh for cooking and sizeable seeds for roasting.
Pumpkins, squash and courgettes can be started off indoors about six weeks before the last frost – around mid-April. They can be sown directly outside from late May to early June.
Trailing varieties of pumpkin and squash can be trained up a support, such as a trellis or arch. Try Squash ‘Winter Celebration Mix’ or ‘Buffy Ball’. Consider climbing varieties of courgette like ‘Shooting Star’ and ‘Black Forest’.
Most winter pumpkins will store if kept somewhere frost-free and well ventilated. Squash ‘Honeyboat’ and ‘Jumbo Pink Banana’ are two winter squash that store well.
