Description
Shiny purple-black foliage emerges in spring and slowly matures to a bright shade of green. The leaves are large and showy making an exotic looking display. Catalpa x erubescens 'Purpurea' produces upright panicles of white flowers with delicate orange and purple markings. The slender seedpods that follow provide further seasonal interest, dangling pendulously from the branches. Indian Bean Trees can be grown as a magnificent free-standing specimen tree in a warm, sheltered garden. Alternatively the branches can be pollarded annually to create a spectacular, large shrub. Height and spread as tree: Up to 15m (49’). Height and spread if pollarded: 4m (13’).

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow
Grow Catalpa trees in fertile, moist but well drained soil. Choose a sheltered position in full sun with protection from strong winds.
More Info
Water Indian Bean Trees regularly until fully established. Unripe wood is prone to frost damage, particularly in young plants. During cold periods, protect plants from the heaviest frosts. Catalpa needs little pruning when grown as a free standing specimen tree. However it responds nicely to pruning and can be pollarded annually to create a large rounded shrub.
