Description
A strong-growing, dense, rounded, deciduous shrub of medium-size which produces extremely fragrant magnolia-like flowers with white strap-like petals in May, which continues to bloom intermittently throughout summer and into autumn. Each flower has contrasting purple and yellow centre markings. Calycanthus 'Venus' produces elliptic to ovate, glossy, mid-green leaves which turn golden-yellow to brownish in autumn. Height: 1.8m (6'). Spread: 1.5m (5').

Culinary note: Produces an edible and delicious spice. Snip off twigs and allow them to dry out in the sun or a low oven, then crush the bark and use like cinnamon. For more details about edible flowers click here.

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow
Acclimatise Calycanthus plants to outdoor conditions for a period of 7 to 10 days prior to planting in their final positions. Grow Calycanthus in borders, in moist, fertile, well drained soil that is rich in organic matter. Choose a position in full sun. Water regularly until Carolina allspice plants are fully established.
More Info
Feed and water regularly throughout the growing season while young plants become established. Once established, prune Calycanthus floridus in early spring as the buds begin to swell. Cut back all stems to a low permanent framework, 3 or 4 buds from the base of the plant. After pruning Carolina allspice, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost around the base of the plant. Caution: Calycanthus is harmful if eaten.

Thompson & Morgan strives to ensure that all its plants are delivered to you in the perfect condition for planting. While the majority of our nursery plants cope well with slight delays in intransit, sadly, the time it takes to deliver to certain locations in the UK means that we can't guarantee this for some of our smaller plug products and tender bedding and vegetable lines, which do not respond well to the extra journey time. So regretfully while we offer the majority of our live plant offering nationwide, we are unable to ship plugs, begging plants and tender vegetable plants to the following areas: HS, IV41-IV49, IV51, IV55-56, KW15-KW17, PA34, PA41-48, PA60-PA78, PA80, PH40-PH44, TR21-TR24, ZE1-ZE3
