An unusual deciduous shrub, with spring blossom, edible berries and beautiful autumn foliage colour.
Native to North America, Aronia melanocarpa is a medium to large, suckering, spreading shrub with glossy, dark green leaves. In spring, it bears small clusters of white, hawthorn-like flowers which a magnet for beneficial pollinators. The blossom is followed by round, purplish-black berries in autumn that are loved by birds. The edible fruit is rich in xanthocyanins and antioxidants, and although it is very astringent, it can be used in cooking and jam-making. In autumn, a second season of interest is provided when the leaves turn brilliant shades of red, orange and purple. Height: 2.5m (8 ft). Spread: 3m (10 ft).
