Description
A colourful twist on a cottage garden favourite! The bright bicolour blooms of this cheery Snapdragon mix will bring something different to your summer beds and borders. Medium height spires stand proudly above bushy, well branched plants that show outstanding garden performance. The upright flower spikes are always a magnet for pollinating insects and make excellent cut flowers. Antirrhinum majus 'Circus Clowns' makes a vibrant display in patio containers or planted en masse for a big impact in beds and borders. Height: 45cm (18"). Spread: 35cm (14").

Culinary note: These pretty flowers can be used as garnishes or dressings but can have a bland or sometimes bitter taste. For more details about edible flowers click here.

Sowing

Sow Antirrhinum seeds indoors or under glass from January to March on the surface of a good quality seed compost and gently firm down. Place the seed tray in a propagator at a temperature of 20-25C (68-77F) or seal inside a clear polythene bag until germination which takes 10 - 21 days. Keep the compost damp but not wet and do not exclude light.

When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into 7.5cm (3") pots and grow Snapdragon plants on in cooler conditions. When all risk of frost has passed, gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions over 7 - 10 days before planting outdoors. Plant Snapdragons at a distance of 30cm (12") apart on any light, well drained soil in full sun.

More Info
Feed and water regularly until snapdragons are fully established. Flower stems may require some support from twiggy sticks or canes as they grow. Deadhead faded snapdragon flowers frequently throughout summer to encourage more blooms to be produced.
