Description

Adenium obesum ‘Red’ is a gorgeous and unusual selection of the Desert Rose that boasts cerise red flowers.

Adenium obesum  is a distinctive, shrubby succulent with a tubby trunk – hence its Latin name ‘obesum’. This stem is actually a swollen root appearing above the surface that stores water, enabling it to survive in its native desert habitat. This swollen stem is topped by a neat wreath of spoon-shaped, glossy-green, leathery leaves. Overall, its appearance resembles a mythical mandrake and even when not in flower, this is a handsome and eye-catching houseplant – its tree-like looks making it a very popular choice for bonsai enthusiasts.  But its charm doesn’t end there. Enjoy this chirpy character for around 2-3 years when it should have reached between 15-20cm in height, and you are in for a further treat. The leafy canopy of Adenium obesum ‘Red’ will start to pop with pinky-red, white-throated flowers. The five-petalled, tubular blooms are arranged in groups at the top of the branches and measuring 2-5cm they somewhat out-proportion the plant, so your Desert Rose will look like a little tree crowned with over-sized flowers. These gorgeous, tropical-looking blooms even last all summer long!

Adenium obesum ‘Red’ is an exceptional houseplant that surprisingly, doesn’t demand exceptional care to deliver its rewards. On the contrary, treat this in a similar fashion to cacti and minister a dose of neglect. A desert-lover, over watering is to be avoided at all costs, and a bright position (but out of direct sun) with a minimum winter temperature 10 °C (50 °F) is essential. During the winter months, the plant will go dormant and lose its leaves. This is a natural process and fresh new leaves will reappear in spring. Adenium obesum is famously resistant to pests and diseases.

Adenium obesum ‘Red’ is undoubtedly a rewarding houseplant, well-suited to neglectful gardeners and well-deserving of its RHS Award of Garden Merit. Maximum height: 30cm (12in). Spread: 20cm (8in).

Please note: All parts of this plant are toxic and the milky sap is an irritant. Avoid getting sap on skin or near eyes. Toxic to pets.

How to Grow
Grow in bright light with some shelter from the hottest sun. An average temperature of 10- 25C (50-77F) is ideal. Water at intervals, allowing the compost to dry out between waterings. Never allow the plant to sit in water as this will cause the stem to rot. This Adenium stores water in its stem so it needs surprisingly little water during the growing season. Reduce watering and allow plants to go dormant and remain completely dry through winter. During this period it will drop all its leaves. This is a normal process and fresh new leaves will regrow in spring.House plants should be fed regularly between March and September when they are in active growth.
