Border perennials are an excellent solution to a gap in the border or an empty pot. Buy once and expect to enjoy your lovely perennials for many years to come. From hardy scabious to tender dahlias, it can be overwhelming to decide which colour and type to choose. Use our pointers below to get started.
Some perennial plants form clumps as they mature. Split the clump every few years and plant the new smaller clumps to make new clones of the original plant. An excellent example of a clump forming perennial is a hosta which gradually gets larger and benefits from dividing. Other good flowering clump formers are crocosmia, agapanthus and trillium.
The best hardy border perennial plant is a hardy geranium. An excellent hardy geranium to start with is geranium pratense which features many lovely varieties, some with blue blooms and variegated foliage. Hardy geraniums are hardy down to -15?.
For groundcover, you can’t go wrong with a geranium ‘Intense’. This long blooming and low growing perennial produces glorious little neon pink flowers which rise up out of fresh green foliage with a height of 25cm.
For tall flowers on long stems, plant foxgloves, leucanthemums and delphiniums. These tall bloomers bring dramatic height and lovely strong colour to a mixed planting. Browse all of our tall perennials for long lasting height in the garden.
Nigella is a classic cottage garden plant that readily self-seeds. Expect to see nigella popping up in spring all around the garden. Lime green alchemilla mollis is another superb self seeder. Both of these dreamy low-growing perennials bring an airy, relaxed feel to the garden. The bi-annual foxglove is a lovely tall self-seeder. Remember to not deadhead any perennials you would like to self-seed!
