Description

The Guelder Rose is a beautiful British native perfect for relaxed, informal hedging. It has several seasons of interest, starting with attractive, flat white blossom in the spring which looks similar to lace cap hydrangeas. The handsome foliage is three-lobed and bright green but takes on stunning red, yellow and purple hues in the autumn, when the shrub is hung with bright red translucent berries which birds love. An excellent choice for wildlife, it will grow in sun or shade although the best flowering and fruiting performance is in sun. Viburnum opulus is a good choice for heavy clay soils which it will happily tolerate. Height: 8m (26'). Spread: 4m (13'). Planting distance: 30 - 45cm (12 - 18"). (4 plants per metre for a single line hedge).

How to Grow
Grow Viburnum opulus in any moist, but well drained garden soil in full sun or partial shade, plants will tolerate exposed and coastal areas quite successfully too.

These plants are lifted from the nursery field when dormant, and sent to you in late autumn or spring for planting. They often look dead on arrival, but they are just resting in the dormant period and will establish quickly for a strong start in the garden come spring. Set out in prepared soil in holes wide enough and deep enough to lay out the roots. Tread down the planting soil to knock out air pockets. Water well to settle. Apply a mulch to protect roots from cold temperatures. If conditions prevent immediate planting, set roughly into loose soil or a pot of compost (‘heeling in’) to protect the roots. Set these at the same level as they were in the nursery field – you should see a soil line at the base of the stem. Stake trees, taller shrubs and roses to prevent root disturbance.

More Info
Viburnum opulus require minimal pruning, you should only trim plants to remove any dead or damaged growth. This should be done during the spring. Plants will also tolerate a harder, regenerate prune if they become poor shaped after a few years.
