Spending Time in the Garden

Whilst it is always a pleasant thing to while away the hours in the garden, sometimes it’s handy to know just how many hours you’ve been out there too.

Garden clocks are becoming ever more popular now that the age of the mobile phone is here. Sometimes, if your hands are covered in soil or compost, or you have a heavy duty pair of gloves on, it’s not possible to pull your phone out of your pocket to check the time, or to roll back your sleeve to check your watch either.

sundial

A sundial is the traditional outdoor method for telling the time but it’s not always easy in our great British climate, when clouds get in the way, or for that matter, when it’s dark! It is possible to buy traditional sundials, although these tend to be more ornamental than practical. A fun project is also to make your own sundial in the garden, by pushing a long, straight stick into the ground and marking off the shadow at each hour of the day, again, not 100% accurate but a bit of fun, especially with younger children.

It’s far easier to glance up at a conveniently placed clock to quickly assess how long you’ve got before you have to give in, put down the trowel and go indoors and have something to eat etc.

Garden clocks obviously need to be weatherproof but they can also be decorative too. They can also be incorporated into a weather station, with a thermometer and barometer included, giving you the maximum in information in your own garden.
